View Full Version : Been thinking about a second chuck

Evening All,

I've been pondering buying a second chuck for my DVR3000. Main reason is I really hate swapping the jaws out when I get tired of pen turning and go to bowls and then back again (so I'm impatient, shoot me :B ). So I have been thinking about a second cheap chuck that can permenantly have the pin jaws attached allowing me to drill my blanks and apply different finishes.

I found this chuck (http://www.cws.au.com/cgi/index.cgi/shopfront/view_product_details?category_id=1107146818&product_id=1107452006) on Carroll's Woodcraft Supplies. The price is reasonable AND it is compatible with the Teknatool jaws my current Supernova2 uses.

So has anyone got this chuck, what are your thoughts? Anything similar I should be considering?

If Jim sells it, it must be OK.

:whs:

Plus if you buy one so that the jaws are interchangable you have more options and probably less jaw changes.

Hope that helps

I bought an identical "Economy Chuck Kit" a while ago, albeit from another supplier (and paid a little more than CWS). For $60 more for the "Kit" you get 3 extra sets of jaws and is probably better value. My only disappointment is that they are not dovetail jaws. Otherwise, I'm very happy.

I've been thinking about a second one as well but it slightly annoys me somewhat that you can't get a chuck with an alternative to the standard 50 mm jaws. I approached Carbatech about it but no luck. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm probably stealing Jim Carroll's thunder, but I understand he offers Vicmarc chucks in what he calls "companion mode" - ie for a lower price, you get the chuck with all the fittings, except the standard jaws, so you can fit your own to suit. I was pleased to learn this, as I'm thinking about a fourth chuck (once you start with multiple chucks, you're hooked ...) and I already have a box full of useless standard jaws - pity you can't trade them in on jaws you really need!

Yes Toasty, it seems to be the same as the GPW 100 chuck and I have been very happy with it. At least as good as the Supernova2. I got the full kit with 4 sets of jaws that GPW sells for $195, a very good deal, I think. As nalmo said.

Thanks for taking the time to reply everyone, it's really appreciated. I'll probably get the one with the single set of jaws and just leave it as a dedicated penturning accessory. Like Tornatus, buying this chuck may only be the beginning of the end ;)

there's always this one (http://www.teknatool.com/products/Chucks/G3/Nova_G3_Chuck.htm) ie Nova G3
if you want to stay with Nova

or this one (http://www.vermec.com/imagelib/sitebuilder/misc/show_image.html?linkedwidth=actual&linkpath=http://www.vermec.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/chuck.jpg&target=tlx_new) if you want to go something which also takes the Vicmarc jaws. But is a lot dearer

but as someone else said - Jim tends to have good stuff and is a pleasure to deal with.

Thanks SM, I have been a long time fan (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=22922) of CWS. Because I have a specifice purpose in mind for this chuck, with the pin jaws permenantly fitted, then the cheaper I can buy - without shooting myself in the foot - the better. Future chucks will be repeats of the SuperNova2 as I am very happy with the one I have now.

How small a world this is! I have also bought their sanding disk set and been very happy with the service. Thanks to the net the Australian market is finally becoming a little more transparent and competitive.

The plus about T/tool chucks is the degree of jaw interchangeability.

The minus is the design of many of the jaws (rounded over jaw faces) and the 20mm or so travel of the SN2 compared with 30mm or so with the equiv. Vicmarc. Also the manufacture of T/tool stuff has attracted adverse comment on this forum. FWIW I just got the Nova Live Centre kit and the threaded centre was packed with grease and grit and took 15 mins of cleaning. Not good enough - but, the kit is excellent design and no-one else comes close.

If it makes it any easier we will have stock of the chucks in Canberra for the wood show.

Save a bit on freight to pick up from the show.

We will have both the chuck and the delux kit available.
