Greetings all,

Does anyone know where I can pick up some offcuts of a bench top material called Corian? I want to have a crack at turning a mortar and pestle from this material. I reside in Blue Haven 2262 on the Central Coast of NSW.

My thanks --- Jonkacel2

Yep.
Yep.

The material is usually of limited thickness, so pester them for advice about gluing too, for large blanks. And try to make the glue joints part of the design for best results.

Here , Stateside, the counter tops, especially Corian, are fabricated by Solid surface specialists. Our yellow pages highlight 3 in our area. I have a fishing buddy and former student who owns a Corian fabrication facility. For years he had scraps and sent them to landfill, A fellow would come by and ask for scraps and he would allow him all he wanted. But one day my friend saw the Pen set he was turning and said he would like to have one. The fellow promply made one and offered it to him at a price...:oo: "Been giving you goodies for years and now you want to charge me for my own stuff (or something to that effect including some select profanity) Get the F*** out of here and never come back! " So, for many years Only landfill and that included his friends.

A couple years ago I inquired about a piece to make some unique cutting boards to another frien who works there, of course his answer was a standard refusal, but when I walked out to my truck, there were several pieces in the bed.:?

As we were/are fishing buddies I cut several nice cutting boards in the shape of a fish.
Walked in and place one on each of my friends desk and left. Got a phonecall and now the Boneyard is mine for the picking (with-in reason, of course) :2tsup:

Moral to my long saga?... Seek out the fabricators (cabinet shops where you buy your top is usually not the fabricator, ask who does their installs) Pay a friendly visit on a Friday afternoon late when the weeks work is done and introduce yourself and show what you plan to do and of course return the favor as he will be awarding you some expensive materials ($50 per Sq Ft)

BTW Corian is 1/2" thick as a rule although there are some special orders 1.25" and 1/4" One side will be smooth and the bottom will be textured, Sand the bottom smooth and you can use CA to Laminate as many layers as you wish. They us an expensive goo to adhere but that is too much to ask for on the first visit. Be sure and make extras to repay the favor, they love to have different displays of their wares, Who knows a special order might come as well.

I've made turned items using Corian....the best glue (other than the expensive $$$$$$$$ stuff that DuPont recommends) is CA. Joe is correct about the thickness...it comes in 1/2 inch thickness.

Uhhh. That was Hickory who had the correct thickness.

Formica (R) also makes solid surfacing in the same thickness, and substantially the same workability. Our WT club proprietor had his kitchen countertop replaced, and made the sample pack available to the members. Lots of pieces about 2" square, all different colours.

Cultivating relationships with suppliers of free material is always a good idea. The offer to SELL a product back to the supplier was dumb, Dumb, DUMB, especially as the producer had fun making the product.

Kitchen Top installation companies now using this material usually have ample off cuts and are happy to give it away.

Cheers

Kentucky is a wonderful place to live...wishin' I was there!!!

I used to sell to the ladies at Constitution Square State Historic Site, 134 S Second St. They bought a lot of honey dippers and mason jar lids.

Have you tried out for Kentucky Craft Marketing or the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsman? Both are good organizations.

Cheers,
Ed :D

No, not yet, although I have often thought of it but my hectic schedule keeping up with two "very mature" mom & aunt has my shop time super limited so I would not be able to supply as promised, etc. Fixin' & repairin' is my only creative out at this time.
