Hi All...

Considering the high cost of heavy duty bowl lathes these days, you might consider building your own like I did back in '84.
It was concrete, salvaged steel parts, plywood (to hold the concrete), a farm duty 1 1/2 hp Baldor motor, a series of jack shafts to bring the speed down. The main shaft was 2" in diameter with the nose cut to 1 1/2 x 8tpi.
`
It would swing a 30" hunk of wood with ease. Low RPM was 100 / high rpm was 600. Good speeds for a lathe that size. Money wise it came out a damn site less than if I had bought a Vega or Woodfast.

Cheers,
Ed :D

Ed,

necessity being the mother of invention I'd say you've done real well :2tsup:

Below is a link to the one I building, progress has come to abit of halt until I get my new workshop up and running.

Plan run up some drawings and a how 'to' manual on it later if there is sufficient interest.

Ed, great lathe for bowlturning.
It's to easy to buy a lathe, but building one for your own use, that's something I also prefer.
Build in 2005 also my own lathe for spindle turning, as well as for bowlturning.
Have a lot of fun with your lathe.

Hoi Ed, I have a lot of pictures of my own build lathe, also WIP pictures of the building process on my website. http://members.lycos.nl/adecrom
Also I use for bowlturning as well as for some spindle turnings, an own made clamping chuck, as you also can see on my website.
I have to admit that I love it to make my own stuff, instead of buying it.
I suppose your new toy works well for you, anyway it looks SUPER.

Cheers. Ad :)

Thanks Ed, it has to move to a new shed soon, I'm thinking of giving it a bit of a tidy up in the process. :-
