Hi, I am currently a year 12 student in NSW. I am unsure about what to do after this year and I am considering a career in the furnishings industry, but I have some concerns.

Firstly, is there a real future in the Australian furnishings industry? what with flat pack/knockdown furniture being made faster and sold cheaper.

Secondly, would it be better to go for a career in working with timber or just to pursue it as a hobby?

Here are some pictures of the project I made for my major work for the HSC :D
(I know its standing on chairs but I did make a brass bracket for it so it can be held on the wall :P)

Hi

There will always be a market for quality, custom made furniture, there are a handful of really good craftsmen who make some fantastic furniture for those who can afford it. Fortunately we have some discerning people in Australia who want and will pay for quality.

You will need to find an employer who is targetting these customers and to apply your passion to learning everything there is to learn both on the job and at TAFE.

Being a Cabinetmaker may not be as 'sexy' as being a systems analyst or accountant but it will reward your creative side if you apply yourself.

Good luck...
