I received my Trend Airsheild today, I knew it would be here today because the nice man at the Customs told me so, just after he told me I'm up for A$250 in charges...........WHAT THE.....:eek:
I thought I was being clever and buying from overseas, which I have done on many occasions.
So, be warned, any goods includeing postage over A$250, is going to get you in the poo.
I think it all depends on transport methods as well, as I have got other stuff from OS, and didnt pay any duty.
I thought I was going to save about A$100, but it has cost me instead. :o
Just as well I can claim it all back. :D :D :D :D :D

When I built my rocking horse last year I had to buy the horse mane & tail, saddle, bridle set, stirrup, swing irons etc from the UK. It costed $350 and I ended up paying $700 for it. The extra cost included delivery, GST and quarantine. They kept it for 3 week for quarantine because it is real horse hair.
It is expensive but there is no one in Australia has the stuff with the same quality.

Years ago my parents lived in South Africa & regularly sent parcels. They always marked them 'Personal Gifts. no commercial or monetary value' We were never asked to pay any tax on them even though we should have legally.

If it came in the ordinary mail there is no charge, well there hasnt been so far.
It apperes that it is only with the couriers, that I have paid.

I'm looking to purchase some pricey stuff from OS, and don't want to get caught out.
The number of the customs office would be a real help to. :D

I have no idea what any of this means, I'm begining to think I've been had.
I will ring Customs on Monday to find out.
The invoice has no indication that its from Customs.
Just checked the online bank details, but it is too soon to see who got the money.
I paid for these "fees" by Mastercard, so if there is any funny business I'll dispute the charges with the bank.

If a courier or broker is used, they will charge for their services. Accordingly, they should be consulted beforehand to find out their costs and charges.
So in future I will always insist on ordinary mail.

That is a rip-off but probably not much you can do about it
With Aust Post you get to do your own paper work - not difficult - and then of course only if they happen to recognise that the package is liable for duty and gst.
A warning to all I guess.

I was shipping some bows back to myself, and they tried to demand that I pay for a 'professional valuer', customs agents etc. I dug my heels in & they promptly caved in as the goods were under the customs thresh hold, used personal effects etc. - I just had to fax them a statement to that effect.
Needless to say, I now refuse to have anything to do with UPS, and I tell anyone I deal with O/S that I won't accept shipping by UPS. Strangely the US Post Awful can seem to deliver my goods without any trouble.
