I have made a few toys over the years and have found the book "Making Hierloom Toys" by Jim Makowicki a great source for ideas.
The attached picture is a one of his designs that I have made using various pieces of timber I have collected over the years, the boiler and wheels are all from Mulga and other parts are from Osage Orange, White Ash, Australian Cedar,She Oak and some Teak.
One of the good things of making these sort of toys is that you only need small amounts of timber.
This one was made for a friend of mine's son who was born on August 8th this year.

Ruddy 20th September 2008, 06:42 PM Thanks all.....Aussie, I used Cabots satin polyeurathane on most of the train after sanding to about 400 grit.. The turned parts were finished with the Ubeaut products.

If you are into toys there is another good book " How to Make Animated Toys " by David Wakefield. i have made some of his & kids love them.

I know kids will go for colourful painted toys, but I love the natural ones..... always thinking ahead.... when the kids are done playing with them.... the natural ones will look like loved pieces of art on any shelf in the house.... giving a house a real home kind of look. Nothing beats natural wood.
Paul..... do you ever sleep? There are more toys on just that one page of yours then I'd think anyone could produce in a life time! lol
I did get that book you mention from our local library a couple of times, but haven't been brave enough to try ...... there's also one for dinosaurs from the same author! It's even got a dino rocking horse in it, dino swing and clothes rack....
I've had a hard time finding books on the real old fashioned toys tho - simple things, like the clowns falling off the ladder etc... bought a book from fox chapel but it only had a couple of things I was after... and the directions aren't all that clear. Wonder why nobody bothers gathering all the old favourites into one book with good , simple instructions?

I love the fact you have put his name and date of birth on there that sort of thing makes toys and the like so much more special to the receiver.
When I get more time and organise my shed I would love to have a go at something like that:)
