I am trying to locate any info. on an item known (in some parts) as a "manservant"?
This item was used to hold jacket, trousers, tie etc. overnight and usually in the bedroom.
It would appear to resemble a coat hanger on legs.
Any pictures, info. websites etc, regarding this item would be appreciated.
Cheers
John

Gooday.

John, I know what you mean. It was to hang a mans clothing on, including shoes and socks.

I will see what I can find for you but it may take a day or two.

Gooday.

Well, John, I can not find any info on the net about it.

I suggest that you check out a couple of local antique stores and see if they have some info.

Sorry about that.

It's called a 'Valet'. Typically, it stands about a metre tall, has a coathanger on a stand at the top. the coathanger is supported at its ends, and below it is a horizontal piece on which you hang your strides. Sometimes, on the sides, are a hook for hanging your belt and/or a tray in which to put your cuff links and collar studs. At the bottom there may be a small box in which to put shoe cleaning gear.

Hope this description helps. There are many variations on the theme, you shouldn't have any trouble finding one in the antique (or junk) shops.

Thanks for that Alex.

John if you look to the right of the bed you will see what one looks like. Sorry but it is the only one I could find.

Yes, But thanks to whoever re-kindled the tread as I have taken the sites and started planning a great idea in my (round 2 It) list of things to make.
SHMBO keeps harping on me for using her quilt rack.

Here's a Men's Valet Chair I bought for $13, spent about $50 refurbishing
http://www.usq.edu.au/users/hoeyw/images/Wood/OCT05/valetchair.jpg

I found a second chair for $2 and it too looks great now.

A second-hand dealer in Toowoomba has about 3 of these type of chairs left. I think he's got about $35 to $70 on them.

cheers
