Hey all,

Am one of the female members here, with an intense love of wood! Although I guess I am still a bit of a novice, I want to move onto a bigger project - building a cubby house for my son (and eventually my little girl who is only 5mths at the moment). I dont have a huge amount of room for it..... probably 2x2mtrs ... and wondering if anyone has some simple plans for one?

As I said, am still a novice - I am attaching a pic of the change table I made when I was 5mths pregnant... let me just say that getting down low enough to stain the whole thing was a HUGE challenge with the bump! Anyways now that I am bump free, I want to get back into wood, and build the cubby my son is hassling me for...so.. simple is the key...help anyone?
Regards

nice change table! I could only imagine the hassles involved in making it while pregnant - it was hard enough for me to make one while my wife was pregnant :D:D

As for cubbies, there are quite a few here in the forums - do a quick search and you'll find heaps. Wongo did one (I'll see if I can find it) that was pretty neat...

Edit: Here it is (http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=17373)

Cheers,
Dave

Thanks for that :)

Yeah it was definately a challenge building the change table with bump in front... I even had to ask my Obstetrician if it was ok for me to be using powertools (router etc) so close to the bump... .he said it was fine (much to hubbies disapointment).

Thanks for the lead, will do a search
Cheers

I'd recommend any of the books by David & Jeanie Styles - I have several, including the one on kids furniture that is still out-of-print. Since you have 2 kid$, try your local library - if they don't have some on the shelf, ask the staff about 'Inter Library Loan', then save coins for the photocopier. (OK, must use cards now).

Other than the kids furniture book, they don't have exact measurements, just recommendations like use 2x6 or 2x8 joists, exterior ply or salvaged boards, old junkyard fittings etc. Really good ideas books which you then adjust to fit your space & budget.

Here are some pics of a cubby/fort structure I'm currently building for the kids. The concept is to build an elevated platform (approx 1.6 m high) that could hold a small ready made kit cubby complete with stairs, slide and safety fencing. Later when my finances recover and my wife lets me return to bunnings again, the plan is to enclose the downstairs area and add a ladder/trapdoor to the upstairs cubby. Here are some progress pics including the original concept plans (that havent been strictly followed).

I based mine on the plans from Mitre 10 with a couple of minor adjustments. ie made it taller so I could stand up in it and added a front porch
easy peasy to make. The basic cubby is 1.8 x 1.8
