Came across this in Christchurch NZ.

From one piece of wood it was made in Fiji in 1981 or earlier.

The body is clearly turned, not sculpted.

It's different, that's for sure! Probably doesn't make as much noise as a parrot. :)

Ah, thanks for that enlightenment MJ.

Dunno if it's a Kava bowl though. The pic was taken in a chapel of the Cathedral. Or if it is, I'm turning Anglican ;-}

Edit: just looked at your pics. Yep.

Do you have to drain one in one go?

Might make for meaningful communion.

Definately a cava bowl rsser, and usually carved not turned. They make heaps in Fiji for use and for the tourists to take home.

I had a look around and found this ,
on the AAW forum , so I nicked it :D

Its from Samoa , but I 'spose the method is pretty much the same.

He uses a string compass to draw the circles for the bowl shapes, both the inside and outside of the rim. Other than that it is all free hand, including the cylindrical pillars that form the legs of the Kava Bowl. The patterns are done completely free hand. No marks or layout done before carving whatsoever. His primary tools for roughing out the bowl shapes and smoothing them were handmade from old machete blades. The tool forms were shaped on a grinding wheel, and then wooden handles made to fit them. The final carved finish is done with a scraper made from the machete blades. It is a somewhat thicker version of a cabinet scraper that we might use. I tried to find out if he uses a burnisher to create the burr but his wife was not sure. I suspect the burr on the scraper is straight from the grinder. Sometimes he sands the finishes with sandpaper, but often he uses sand (literallly) rubbed into the wood with his hands, first dry, then wet, followed by other finer abrasive materials like fish skins. His choice depends more on what is at hand and what he can afford at the time.

A bird bowl?

Very nice, Ern.

Jock, to convert a quoted link into a functioning link, add a blank space at each end. Unfortunately, AAW has image access to attachments limited to logged-in members, similar to here, which status seems to vary nowadays.

Cheers,
Joe

Thanks Joe , all fixed now. :2tsup:

Yes , I tried to join the AAW forum , and they rejected me .
either because they do not recognise New Zealand email addresses , which is not uncommon from american forums etc.
or because they don't think that Manuka Jock is my real name :U

Bit of a bugga really , I would like to see the Samoan carver's work

I will try again under Jock Manuka :D

Jock, they now have a policy of accepting only your 'real' name.

So you need either to fess up to it or give 'em a porkie.

LoL.

Well that's a damn nice bit of woodwork.

Do you know whether the kava preceded or followed the work? :D

Manuka Jock

I dunno what came first Ern , or if kava helps carvers or not .
Either way , we gotta lift our game .
Here is more of John's work

Dad brought this back from Fiji in the 1980s. He said it was carved for him whilst he watched. I asked whether he had kava out of it (or kava period) he said no. Not sure I believed him.
looks a lot like yours - I use it for loose change, wallet, keys etc
