This sleigh style dresser was inspired be a commercial dresser my wife wanted to purchase. The commercial piece is one of those cheap particle board snap together, fall apart in a few years products. Being a woodworker I would have none of this and promised to build something in the sleigh style that far exceeds the quality of the commercial piece. Woods used are quarter sawn white oak and African mahogany.

The project was quite time consuming taking me some 250 hours. The sturdy construction features frame and panel sides with flame mahogany veneered panels. Frame and panel dust frames set in dadoes between each drawer compartment tie the case together. Maple ply drawer boxes edged with hardwood ride on full extension slides. Inlaid pulls nested in an elliptical recess add character to the drawer faces but the pull design is not very user friendly. I will design something different for my next chest.

Since the piece is quite heavy and the feet are a bit small I beefed up the thickness of the foot by laminating a piece of 3/4" stock to the foot to yield a 1 1/2" thick foot. The foot was tapered to blend with the 3/4" face frame.

This was done using a router and jig. The jig is a sled which follows a precise arc and allows the foot to be precisely and consistently sculpted.

The work piece is held in the jig with wedges. The jig performed well but further blending was done by hand.

I have also written a post in the general woodwork forum on installing the inset drawer faces. I hope you enjoyed and thanks for looking.
