"Climb Cut" Explanation......

Can anybody explain what is meant by "climb cutting" in referance to using a roundover router bit over finger or dovetail joints?

As I understand it the term refers to feeding the timber in the same direction as the bit is rotating. This is the opposite of what you would normally (and most safely) do. There is a tendency for the job to "climb" but it can reduce tear-out in some situations. Hold on tight though!

As george said this is a technique to use very carefully. I use it sometimes where the grain requires it. I usually cut to full depth in te normal direction, then hand plane the edge and route again with a climb cut. Be "very" carefull should you choose to use this method. Try light cuts in the normal direction and sanding first maybe?

Oh, bit of a correction here. I the grain direction requires climb cut routing I usually belt sand the edge, not plane as the grain will probably tear with the plane. See ya. Rod
