For reasons that I can explain later, I need as soon as possible to find a name for my planned RAID41 build.

Any connection to Australia, exploration or raiding very welcome.

Male names ok, since RAID41 is quite male is style.

So far, "Flinders" has come out favourite. As an Englishmen who mapped the Australian coast in small boats it is a good fit, but might be a bit obvious.

Thanks for help

How about "Trim" - the name of Matthew Flinders' cat. There is a cute statue of Trim near the statue of Flinders near the State Library in Sydney. Here's a Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trim_(cat))article on him.

Jeremy, that's a really nice suggestion. "Trim" certainly suits the design too.

Thanks, Brian

It is a good suggestion. Normally I really dislike ideas that people come up with for names of other peoples' boats ... but this, my friends, is a ripper!

TO THE MEMORY OF TRIM
The best and most illustrious of his race
The most affectionate of friends,
faithful of servants,
and best of creatures
He made the tour of the globe, and a voyage to Australia,
which he circumnavigated, and was ever the
delight and pleasure of his fellow voyagers
Written by Matthew Flinders in memory of his cat
Memorial donated by the North Shore Historical Society

That is one heroic looking cat in the statue!!! Definitely not a soggy moggie

Decision made, "Trim" it is. What a result. Thanks again, Brian

Just need to choose a font and create an outline graphic of the statue to place just to the right of the name. MIK do you have a favourite font?

Brian, That's a really good name! For what it's worth, I like the look and "feel" of Papyrus - particularly for a RAID/expedition boat, a little rough around the edges, so to speak. Here is "Trim" in bold italic Papyrus.

Just an idea.

More to the point, how far off are the plans ?

If I don't finish them by the end of the month I will be deep fried in the oil of my choice.

and I would supplying the oil!!!

Bob, "a little rough around the edges" . See what you think, have a look here at the wonderful web log of Chris Perkins who is just completing a canoe build and is due to start on RAID41 as soon as the plans are released.

http://strathkanchris.wordpress.com/boats-i-have-built/stangarra/

Note that the pictures towards the end of the build show Stangarra has gold leaf lettering and stickleback symbol. So "Trim" will be in gold leaf, with a black outline profile of the cat with silver leaf for the white feet! How about that for a first off.

Brian

I suppose it would fall to us locals to do the deep frying bit.
Would suggest olive oil - much more healthy than the usual lardy monosaturates used in fish & chip shops...

Brian,

Guess I should have asked a question or two before speaking up. :)

The gold leaf will look great! Far more elegant than what I was thinking. I'm looking forward to the pics!

Very cute!

BTW the Australian working class boats .. skiffs, VJs etc often used to have a large owners insignia on the sail near the clew of the mainsail.

Certainly no higher or further forward than this one

Cool old pictures!

So, looking at those pictures I wonder, what does the logo/insignia for the GIS look like?

Howdy ... because you link to the page ... rather than the picture.

If using windows ... right click the picture and select "copy image location'.

Then go to the forum click the icon above the writing area for images and paste the link in the little window that opens. BUT see the question mark in the link? You need to get rid of the question mark and everything after that.

I like the graphic joke of the logo!!! Is that your background? Maybe the got needs to be closer to the edge and look more nervous? Or more triumphant ... with sadder looking goats on top of the smaller letters.

I think it might be better as a transom decal because of the detail.

I did specify a sail insignia of GIS in a sans serif font with letters between 100 and 150mm tall.

Hi

just for fun really. The GIS bit without the goat on top just seems to make a nice logo for the sail. That bit is not copied from anywhere, all my own work!

As you say, goat standing on the "island" quite good fun. Lots of other Goats if a Goat owner wanted to work some more on the idea.

If you want to make a hull decal for people to purchase you can go to cafepress.com and do a sticker or series of stickers.

We can point to them from here.

The Biting Midge has already done this for some PDRacer Ware
http://www.cafepress.com/pdracerclassic.79898660

I feel no embarrassment from this promotion because 100% of the proceeds buys pigs for an orphanage in Mongolia. Cool, eh!

I'm thinking of continuing the heroic ship's cat theme when I get to build my RAID41 - "Mrs Chippy" springs to mind and also has a southern hemisphere connection! Not quite as exquisite a name as "Trim" but surely just as deserving!

Just like Trim, Mrs Chippy sadly met with an untimely end......

Boat names just happen.

I was talking about building a lot of my own rigging parts and
some one on an other forum made the statement:

And named the boat at the same time.

Unnecessary Complications

This is another really cool name. I suppose exploring animals are quite a few.

Well done!

I suppose it is only a matter of time before someone finds something like a Yak called Errol. But this is a really cool theme!

Late night musings...

Watching the video in a recent WBF thread - http://www.woodenboat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=96517 - reminded me of the old pics Mik posted in this thread. Aside from these being incredible boats, I like the markings stylized bear and bull heads on the sails, shown in these pics.

http://www.bullbearsailing.com/gallery/07-10-2007/SE-8x12-200dpi-06-184_resize.jpg

A stylized goat would look pretty cool on ta GIS sail - and it would be distinctive out on the race course... . an old school touch. :) Just a thought...

I'm not much of an artist and apparently my internet search skills are wanting as I couldn't find any images I thought could work. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas on this?

Better pic of the bear head...
