We want to install sliding doors and some windows and I have had quotes for laminated and 5 mm toughened glass. The laminated is so much more expensive, so we're leaning toward the toughened...but are worried about security from intruders/burglers?

If thieves are gonna get in, glass won't stop them....and unless you put laminated glass in every window, they will likely break in through a smaller window for the very reason that larger ones might be laminated....and make a LOT of noise when smashed.

Our very obvious alarm is possibly the best investment we have made, meaning we took all the precautions of windows locks dead bolts and closing curtains etc when out....but none of these things equal the white box on the front of the house along with the neighbourhood watch stickers on every point of access

Toughened glass reduces the risk of injury if you break it. Laminated glass is much stronger and stops UV.
