yes it took about 20 min to get it into the boat, and i was lucky as the leader, 80 lb nylon was just about shredded were it went into its mouth.

Why did you kill it?

we ate it & lake awoonga is a stocked dam & barra do not breed in it, it is regularly stocked with small barra .
the dam is managed by the gladstone water board & they ask you to not return fish over 900mm as they eat the small restocked fish.

squigie slick rig is a soft plastic fish, the one that i was using is 130 mm long green&gold color, with a number 7o hook in it you can cast and retrieve them or troll them behind a boat very slowly& they swim like a fish.

Cheers and congrats on a good catch. Are there many sticks around that dam? One of the dams here with big barra has wood everywhere and the other not much at all. And the others I haven't been to.
My son had a 8lb fish hit his lure one day and reefed the rod out of his hands. A loomis GL2 with a shimano calcutta 200 I think it was. We dredged with the boat anchor and found the line, then the rod then wound in the fish!

The dam has some areas of timber but is mostly open water with weed & snags along the banks.
your son was lucky to get his rod & reel back.
My wife & i are planning a trip to fish the dams around Mackay in late feb next year
then go to peter faust dam weather permitting.
