Mitre joints

I've been to a picture framing workshop and will be starting to do a lot of framing, particularly for my family's needlework. I can't afford to buy a Nobex saw just yet, so will have to make do with my old mitre box.
Does anyone have any suggestions of ways to ensure the mitres are accurate?
