I figured this should be documented for prosperity. Not one nick or bump in any of the digits so I am pretty happy. A second one will be coming too.

It is Jarrah and finished in Wipe on Poly.

I was tossing up on whether to use wings or not, and if anyone has tips on attaching them I'd love to hear them. I am not keen on gluing (hot melt or otherwise) to a face that will end up being a ~5mm wide edge only to have it tear out when i remove the wings...
I spose a new blade in the table saw would be ok, and gently cut then off just kissing the workpiece. Like i said any ideas would be appreciated because I think I might need to make more of them

Well done Shannon :2tsup:, makes my candle holders look very ordinary.

Thanks guys.

John, thanks for the complement but it doesn't need to be at the expense of your work. I did like yours too.

Sweeter still since the fingers are intact.

Looks good, maybe turned up a tad too tight

If you want to glue some pieces on to break off after, use paper in between :;

Thanks all.

Funny you should say that DJ. The original sketch is quite shallow, and has a foot. In practice I didn't have patience for a foot . I am going to try a few different styles so lets see what I come up with.

Great technique Shannon.

+1 to the points being too agressive.

Quality hot melt glue holds pretty damn well btw.

That's actually what I was afraid of. It might have something to do with the steepness of the points but I expected the glue would tear out the sides as I levered them off. Can only try I guess.

I am not trying to argue with those who have suggested the tips are too high, but I wanted to add another photo just to show the candle lit. I thought i'd try to have the wings lift up and give the illusion of shelter. (The photo didn't work out too well so it didn't go up initially).

Yep, camera angle makes a difference.

Re hot melt, k, see what you meant. I got away with 5 small blobs holding the inside rim of a fairly heavy nat edge bowl to MDF in order to clean up the foot. When done, warmed it up with a hair dryer and knocked it off. Got only one chip out.

 of course you warm the hot melt up again. Thanks Ern.

Yup.

Watch the timber though - Jarrah should be OK. Desert acacias ... maybe.
