View Full Version : It's a new coffee table in RRG

Despite the ongoing renovation....we managed to make some time for the creation of a wedding gift for some family members who needed some new furniture.

The brief was a new coffee table. Too easy. In terms of timber we were free to select as long as it wasn't 'too dark'. Moving through our own collection we selected a few chunks as samples for a quick plane and oil. On a whim we added in the potentially 'dark' river red gum (easily and cheaply available) as a sample. A very quick turnaround in opinion said that they'd like their table in river red gum.....please.

Size wise it is roughly 1350x600x450 so not too far off the Golden Rule dimensions.

All timber is River Red Gum and all has been naturally air dried over a period of between two years and twenty years. The top is derived from 200x50 landscape sleepers that have been reduced and squared down to roughly 180x40. Rails were 100x50 1st grade timber, again reduced and squared to a dimension I can't recall. Legs were recycled 100x100 RRG verandah posts, stripped and squared.

Joinery is plain old mortise and tenon with all joints reinforced by a vertical dowel. The top has been glue laminated. I used the Titebond Premium for this project as a test of the product for future use in the kitchen. Al surfaces have been finished with 400grit wet & dry except the top which we worked down to 1200 grit

The finish is Intergrain Natural Decking Oil - an outdoor product but one that provides a very fine finish and good natural colour holding properties. The top was wet polished in the stuff to try and get a surface glow which was mostly successful.

In the end.........very happy customers. And a quietly chuffed construction team.
