Hello all,

I am new here. I am not originally from Oz so I am struggling to find the right suppliers for stuff.

I want to buy a piece of Queensland Maple venner so I can restore an old Gramophone. I have made a good couple of phone calls to various suppliers like Briggs etc
They can only supply a plywood sheet with the veneer on it or veneer with iron on glue on it or they have a minimum order of $100 or they don't have this type of wood.

None of them seem to have the option of goind there and handselecting the veneer to match something existing.

Where is the right place to go and buy proper plain veneer to match existing old veneer?

Surely in this vast land has to be a specialised shop for this?
I am in Sydney by the way.

Kind regards
Bernt

salvage some from an old decco dressing table you can pick them up at most op shops for 50 bucks.
I've got one in storage about to send to the Op shop but I'm in melbourne

In this vast land they're arn't many people and long distances to be travelled, specialist timber is quite hard to source new.

Hello

Thhank youv ery much for the kind replies!

Astrid, I am not sure if I can do that because I will end up wantiong to restore the dresser as well :-)
Also, how would one get the veneer off in one piece?

I still cannot believe that there seems to be not one person in Sydney who knows where to buy veneer...

I will try another forum as well.

Regards
Bernt

you get the vaneer off by heating the edge with a warm iron and melting the olg glue, while it is warm slide a pallet knife under the edge and carefully work it loose.
How big is the gramophone, you shouldnt need that much.

Yes him.:2tsup: Real fun to actually visit. His garage is absolutely chockers except for tiny corridors between the stacks. But does mail order too. I get the impresion that he has bought up stock as other businesses have gone belly up.
