Hello everyone from a new kid on the block.
Can anyone identify what I presume to be is some kind of heavy duty marking gauge. I lashed out 50 cents for it a local market, and so, after such expenditure, I would like to find a use for it. It is made in one piece and is stamped into the timber in a number of places with F.B.STOLZ. It is slightly blackened as though it has been too close to a fire. Please see attached photos (if I can get the flaming things to upload).

Looks like a cutting gauge for marking across the grain at the end of the board. Possibly has a specialised use - I'm sure someone here will know exactly what it's for.

Hi Manana,

I thought, (and read that as 'I am guessing') that it is an old wooden router plane for doing groove work.

But, as Alex said others here will probably know for sure.

I would suggest that the stamped letters, (name) would be the owner's name, it appears to be stamped in more than one place. Perhaps he made it. Again, others to advise.

Cheers

I dont think it is a marking guage. As Pops said more like a routing plane or something to clean out grooves. Perhaps a shipwrights tool of some kind.

I found one very similar in a book called "collectable hand tools" by Dominique Pascall.
When I have a bit of time to reconnect my scanner I shall post a pic'. However it is definitely a router plane.

Quote from book "This router plane Is a tool designed for smoothing bas relief sculptures"

My initial thought was that it was a 'grandma's tooth' router plane, but I'd question why the 'handle' would be behind the cutter. Would be awkward to use, I reckon.

So where are the pics mate?:D:D Why are we waiting?:D

Alex, I have heard of the 'Grandma's Tooth' router plane but can't remember anything else about it. Where are all our old tools experts?

That is an OWT or Old Woman's Tooth, sometimes called an Old Hag's Tooth. It is a router plane.

Make your own ...

Yeh, a nice little book, this is one I borrowed from the library but if I see one and the price is okay I shall certainly get it for myself.

Okay, Okay!

You have shamed me into connecting my scanner - having a few problems with it but if you excuse the poor quality scan here 'tis; and as a bonus you also get this old wheelwrights grooving plane.

There you go. Mystery solved.

Onya Den and Derek. :2tsup: New I had seen that new Old Hag's Tooth plane somewhere.

So I guess that makes the market find an old, Old Hag's Tooth Router Plane.

Thanks to all of you who have posted comments about my bizzo - looking at it now, on it's side, it is obvious what it is. - a router plane.
Thanks again.
