This is for Ian. Thank you for the education. I embarrassed myself not knowing what a slick chisel was and then after a full description and a picture I realized I had something like it in my old steel collection. My uncle had a set of them and this is the sole survivor (it's 35mm wide) from a bushfire that claimed his house and melted most of his tools. He found it in the ashes and gave it to me as I thought I would try and re-temper it one day.
Any info on the possibilities of doing so would be appreciated.

maybe also post this across in the hand tool and general woodworking sections.

I've seen and handled a slick, and had it's use described in some detail (at a talk to The Traditional Tools Group on timber frame construction) — but I've not actually used a slick myself
