a new litter

Our Miniature Dachshund Maggie has had her litter.

She had 3 boys and 3 girls which is a lot for a mini, I included a photo before she had them and one with her new babies and also a couple of her babies on their own

the first one was born midnight Friday and the last 5am Saturday morning so what a way to spend a night !!!!!

she definitely was low to the ground near the end she use to get stuck coming through the doggie door !!

Make sure she gets plenty of Vit D and Calcium.Dachsis very prone to eclampsia, and she's had a big litter, so her Ca stores may be depleted.

There used to be a product called Collo-Cal-D which was specifically for nursing bitches.It would probably still be on the market,but may be under a different name.

If you have fed the dog a well balanced diet--I'm a subscriber to raw meat and bones--she should be OK' but it's too much of a risk with a big litter ripping the milk out of her!!

I called into the vet today and they said that there was not anything available as in Vit D and Calcium and suggested that puppy-plus which is a dry food would be the best for her as it has everything in it for her. We have powdered calcium at home and I suggested giving her that, they didn't say not to but they could not tell me how much to give her. We gave her a scrambled egg with powdered calcium in it this morning so we may continue with that.

we are the same as you and give her raw meat and raw chicken necks and she loves them, so if we continue this as well as the puppy-plus we think she should be ok :fingerscrossed:

The puppies are nearly 4 weeks old and are doing very well as the photos below will show.
Their mum (Maggie) tried her best to feed all 6 but because of this she ended up with eclampsia which is associated with low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia) that can occur in lactating (nursing) bitches (I hope I got that right).
Well that meant that she could not feed them full time any more.What we ended up doing was feeding them through the day and she would feed them at night.

Got to thank Jim(BVSc ret'd) Lignin for his advice and helpful tips as he helped me to be aware of the problems that may be associated with her having such a large litter
