I was going to buy an original incra jig and my dad had one that he wasn't using and gave it to me. Just the jig, nothing else. I built the fence and the right angle fixture. I ordered the master reference guide and template strips. I saw a post on here about whether or not to cut the templates (because they are much longer) but my question is WHERE do they go on the jig or slide into and how far in do they go or what do they butt up against. I am new at this but usually pretty competent but I just cant figure this out.

Ok, you center your work, center the positioner, align ANY mark on the template (probably near the middle) and go from there. You want your dovetails or whatever to be symetrical and you start in the middle so you don't run out of travel/marks. Once you start you just ahve to ensure the template doesn't move. There is nothing it butts up against or references to, the whole point is it is all relative so you can get your work exactly centered after it's clamped in the RA fixture.

Hope that helps. Oh and welcome to paradise. Incra's rock...

I have a grey plastic one from years ago. I use it as a positioner on the drill table and use an Ultra on the router table.
