Fathers Day is first Sunday in September, for those of us in Oz. Know it is different in other places like Europe and US, but not sure when.

I'm almost surprised you didn't band the other ends of the round file handles, so they can use a mallet when "enlarging" holes in stock. :innocent: (A must if 'twas for my ex-FIL.)

Nicely done! I bet they were both very happy with 'em when they unwrapped their pressies. :2tsup:

Well.... I guess I'll mark you off my Christmas list, too. :~

All the same, they are a nice set and an inspiration to make some myself. (basicly because you won't send me some) I have a drawer full of files and seem to always pull out the same few. Perhaps I should delete a bunch and select "the few" as primary tools and make a set of handles but I am not privy to such fine looking wood as you...

Alas, I am limited to hoping for a gift from an Aussie wih a big heart. :B

Great job - might have to treat my files to some as well - now where are those Jarrah offcuts :U
I could do some for my stepfather to match the pen I made him, hmm

how did you maneged to center the files in the middle of the handle?
I find this opperation very difficult, for me has to be perfectly plumb.
Do you clamp the files in the vice and tap the handles on top, or vice versa?
With some pics pls...
Cheers,
John

The holes are drilled on the lathe before any shaping is done, this way the handle is shaped while centred on the drilled hole using a live center.

I drill the holes using 2~3 bits depending on the shape of the file tang, this gives a staggered hole.(I tested it in some scrap first) To put the handles on like most tool handles you tap the end of the handle down on something solid(pref on some softwood) and let the weight of the file/tool do the work.

I tried to buy some files without handles but no one sells them any more. I remember when you could not buy a file with a handle and now its the other way round:doh:

I happen apon these ones from deceased estate, got 3 boxes(10) of them enough to last me out I reckon. They are from the Wiltshire File Company(Aust company, they dont make them anymore that I know of?)
