I've seen an electric branding iron, looks a bit like a soldering iron in some US mags.
On the end is a customised brand with something like 'Handcrafted by xxx'
Are these available here anywhere? I've looked at a lot of the big outlets and cannot find one, I would even be happy with one that needs to be heated manually over a gas flame.
Failing that, any other suggestions.
I v've tried engraving with a dremel but I find it wanders off when it feels like it, I also have a pyrography outfit but it does not look professional.

Yeah I think I have seen what you are talking about. But not sure if in Aus or the US. They have heaps of different standard heads you can fit as well. Different shapes etc.
I reakon those little brass tags that you can get made embossed with your logo is the way to go.... BUT walk into an elcheapo furniture store like Amart or the likes and just about every piece has these little tags attached.... So I could see customers relating these tags to furniture they find in the elcheapo stores, as I doubt anyone would really take much notice of what was actaully embosssed on them in elcheapo stores....... But I have no idea who would make them anyway...... I guess a trophey supplier would be able to...

Anyway, I will have a look at my catalouges and see if I can't find what your talking about Iain. I know I have one with it in somewhere.....Will get back to you....

Cheers...

Argh, just found it.. That didn't take me too long...

I had seen it in the 2000 Carba-Tec Catalouge. But I would pressume you have already looked in that... And also it dosn't say anything about custom made tips, so it may not be exactly what your looking for.. but if you havnt looked in there catalouge its on page 100-102..

Cheers

Thanks Shane, I have seen that one but the US one I have seen looks like a big plumbers soldering iron with a large oval or rectangular personalised plate on the end, it would measure about 35mm by 15mm or a bit more and has a border around the script. I found them in an American magazine and they were quite specific in stating within US only. There was no brand name to go with but they cost about US$40.00, and of course were 110v, which means that here they would get twice as hot http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/wink.gif.
I have thought about the brass plate and using a forstner bit to inlay one but I thought this would be quicker.
I once made up some Tasmanian Tiger inlays for a large custom furniture manufacturer but of course these were only two pieces of contrasting timber scrollsawn then sliced with the tops and bottoms alternating giving a nice effect but a name plate is too fiddly for the saw.
I shall keep looking.

Yeah thats what I thought afterwards Iain.. Let me know how you get on. Its something I have often thought about before myself, but have never looked into deeply..

Iain,
I purchased a branding iron from the states and I was most impressed by the service, courtesy and assistance given. If you email me I will give you all the details that you require if you are still interested. The best part was that I could use the branding iron as a template to have a rubber stamp made. It works fine and looks impressive when you give a small gift to someone.

Rough price was about 185Ausd, worth every dollar.

Roger's right - I think the article was about 4 years ago. In the issue after the article is a letter from someone who had a branding tip for a soldering iron made up locally & was very happy with it. If you can't find a copy, let me know and I'll have a look in my old copies.

cheers,
Alex

I only subscribe to Woodsmith, would appreciate any info. Spoke to and he tells me that that the surface has to be dead flat and the brand has to be applied square or you will only get half a print.
I can now see another problem, if I do get one, everyone in Melbourne is going to know about it and want to borrow it http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/wink.gif
Wheres Neil anyway? He usually chips in with some comment or is he hibernating?

Sorry Iain, couldn't find the letter re the Australian manufacturer. I have an idea that they were in Sydney's southern suburbs, round Hurstville or Mortdale, but that might just be the Alzheimers talking.

Found it! The article was in Aust Woodworker issue 76 Dec. 1997, and I think the response was in the next issue. I'll look it up when I get home & let you know the address.

Hi Iain,

Axminster Power Tool Centre is a great tool shop in England and have almost any tool you can think of!! They have a huge catalogue and of course a web site www.axminster.co.uk (http://www.axminster.co.uk)
They have a branding iron for 65 English Pounds and loads of other stuff that I think you're looking for. Hope this will help you further.

The comment made in a previous post about the branding iron being flat is not all together true as some are made with a concave design for pens etc.
I think the comment may have mean't that all hot surfaces of the irons design should come in contact with the wood at the same time.
Just my 2c worth whislt being pedantic.

Attached is a link to a picture of a mark on my table.. Was this made with some type of brand - It looks burnt in but I have little knowledge of this sort of stuff.
If it is branded - how long ago did they start doing this? Was this a common way for woodworkers to "label" their product?

Thanks,
Sam
