Hi all,

I was recently in the company of someone smoking a beatifically turned tobacco pipe. He had it made for him from apple wood, cost him over a grand:o. When asked about the construction, all he could tell me was that instead of the usual carving method, the maker uses a lathe to turn them either eccentrically, or in a couple of sections that are later joined, depending on the model. I haven't been able to find anything more on this, but would love to give it a go.

Can anybody shed some light on the subject?

Cheers,
Aaron

An old bloke who worked for me in Ireland used to make pipes for himself and co-workers. The wooden ones were made of apple or mountain briar (which he fettled for several years while they were still growing to obtain a really good root).

He carved the pipes, but he had a clever little jig for turning the exterior and interior of the bowl and the mouthpiece end of the stem.

Think this has been covered before Aaron. Have you done a search?
