Just did a quick trip up to Cairns for a few days. Flew up on Wednesday morning early and came back yesterday afternoon (Sunday) Cairns was beautiful but hot and humid this time of the year. It wasn't long enough but we saw some great things. Went to Green Island and did some snorkeling which was fun but didn't see much as the water was a bit murky close to the beach where I was but saw plenty of fish from the pier and the underwater observatory there.
Went up to Kuranda on the sky lift which was awesome, had a devonshire tea for lunch there looked around the markets and butterfly place which was fascinating.
Also went to the Crocodile farm and found that very interesting too. Bought a croc belt.
The weather was absolutely terrific while we were there and never even saw a mosquito but put on plenty of RAID just in case. The floods had completely gone by the time we got there which surprised me after seeing the pictures of main street Cairns only the day before in the papers. There was no sign of the flood when we arrived on Wednesday morning.
did most of the touristy things and of course ate too much food but thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Highlight of the trip for me was catching up with a couple of forumites, Cliff Rogers, who went out of his way to meet up with me in Cairns for a cup of coffee and had a great chat for about an hour at a nice little shady spot at a boardwalk cafe.
Also met up with Bob (Bobsreturn2003) from Kuranda in his shop. has some great pieces that he turns and sells up there. Had a nice little chat with Bob who is a very friendly guy. So thanks Cliff and Bob, was great to catch up with you both.
Flew there and back with Virgin airlines so no food on the flight but was a good trip both ways.
First time I have been to Cairns and I can tell you, if you haven't been there, its worth a look. Plenty to do but its a rather expensive place for tourists but I guess that's true of anywhere these days. Surprised me how quiet it was business wise hardly anyone in the streets for the first couple of days but it did pick up towards the end of the week but still not overcrowded by any means.
Casino is a nice building and cheap meals in there, nothing over $12 in one of the restaurants, so that was good.
And as for the old adage, its great to be home.... Nah, would rather still be up there on holiday. :)
