Happy Australia Day
:bbq2::fireworks::partysmiley:

Thank you everyone for taking part in this swap, the largest yet. 11 Countries and 102 lines in the draw.

Thanks to DJ for keeping the list up to date on the Ubeaut forum, its the only one I lost ability to edit and Nick "Sawdustmaker" for providing the original spreadsheet.

I will post it in a list but will also put the spreadsheet there which is the easiest to follow. All those in yellow will have to register on another forum to talk to their partner or send me an email with your address [email protected] (http://www.woodworkforums.com/[email protected]) and I will forward that onto your partner in privacy.

I think we got a good spread of people, it took a lot longer than I thought to arrange. Anyone who asked for a second slot has it I hope, its pretty hard to keep track of it all.

If anyone has problems please send me an email and I will try to sort it out I belong to at least 6 forums and you are registered on one of them.

If in doubt go to the spreadsheet as it is correct the sheet did not pull across as I thought.

Please post your completed swap pictures here, remember no posting until the partner has his pen and blanks if you wish. Post when you have sent and received and I will update the spreadsheet.

Funny, I drew a guy in Australia and he seems like a swell guy as well :2tsup:.

John, my new live center is supposed to showup today and then I'll spin you up a surprise and get a package in the post. Hard to believe that a year of using an un-hardened live center can leave gouges in it big enough to make your blanks turn out of round.

Mick, from what I've seen with UPS to Canada when they cross borders they charge you anywhere from $30 to $60 for clearing customs. My advice is stick with USmail. Might be a little slower but much cheaper for the recipient. From experience I've learned if a US company won't ship US mail I don't buy.

Todd Glover
4th February 2009, 03:39 AM
So are you saying the best method of shipping for us folks in the US shipping to Australia is US Mail. I certainly wouldn't want my recipient to have to pay a bunch of money to get my package at the end of the swap!

You got it. I've seen guys hit with a $50 brokerage fee by UPS here in Canada for a $20 item I doubt the company is any different any place else. Anything I've had come by mail marked as a gift and valued less than $20 came though customs etc no charge. When you fill out the paperwork make sure it is marked as a gift as well and value it around $15 at the most.

USPS is the best way to send to Australia from the US not USP

YIPEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D I've got mine, but I feel bad!!!:-

I've done a few pen swaps in the last couple of years and while I love every pen that I have received, this one from Dave Lim ( AKA Timberbits ) is just phenomenal!!!!:oo:

When we send pens and stuff to other penmakers, I reckon we each hope that our own pen that we send will be a little better than the one we recieve. Well, I failed miserably on this one.

The fit on this Jr Gent is absolutely perfect and the glass like finish just blows my mind!!!! Add in a beautiful pen box, several blanks and a pen case and you will know why I'm embarassed.

Mr Lim, thank you very, very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

I got my pen (or should I say pens) from Steven yesterday but didn't have a chance to post the pictures until now.

That right! I got 2!

Skiprat1 - I think I did well out of this deal too! The Stainless pen is one of a kind. I can jiggle around in my pocket without me being worried about scratching the plating off the surface. The sierra is a wonderful looking pen as well. Thank you very much Steven, it was well worth the wait!

The acrylic pen blanks are also fine specimens. Can't wait to turn them into pens.

Thanks for the kind remarks about my little package. There are defects in them too, but I won't tell you what they are (its a secret between you and me, we won't tell the world about it).

Special thanks to Sam for organizing the event. I think you have 2 happy members here.

Don't want to rain on your parade clinch, but surface mail from Canada does not have a good record to Australia. In a recent blank swap my Canadian partner sent me some blanks in early November 2008, they have yet to arrive. In fact he finished up re-sending another lot airmail and even they took more than 4 weeks to arrive, but at least they arrived. This was not an isolated case either, other people have had similar problems with stuff coming from Canada.

My other partner, also in Canada (it was a 3 way blank swap), decided to send me some blanks as well. They were sent airmail first week in January, and again they have not yet arrived as of today.

In contrast most parcels sent from the US via USPS get here between 7-10 days, the record being 3 days!

Let's keep our fingers crossed:2tsup:

David (Timberbits) that birdseye Huon Pine pen set and box are great, you have certainly used that increasingly rare Tasmanian timber to its' best advantage, both on the pen set and the gorgeous box. Well done.:2tsup:

Skippy your pens are great (dare I say "as usual":)), the SS pen is up to your usual high standard, love those blue acrylic inserts, very inventive. I reckon David is a very lucky bloke to have received some "skippy" pens.

Only problem I have now is when I look at my effort so far............

Ack, I'm falling behind.

I'm afraid Fred (Bigshed) still has a bit of a wait before mine is ready to send. Heck I don't even know if it's going to turn out. I'm kinda pushing the boundries of more than 1200 years of Japanese lacquerware culture with this "experimental" pen:oo:. My old sensei would not be amused....lol. I give it a 30/70 chance of success so just in case I have another much less "out there" offering on standby. So anyway, Fred....slowly but surely.

Hey Rick

Nice to hear you are happy with your package.

Crap. I put the wrong paper bit into your box, it should read "Tasmanian Burl Myrtle". I check another box a made at the same time out of blackwood and sure enough it say "Tasmanian Burl Myrtle". Must of been distracted by the kids when I was packing your parcel.

Its a Dayacom JNR Gent not a Baron.

Also thanks in advance for the parcel that you sent me.

No problem Now I know what those blanks you included will look like ahead of time. I figured it was a Baron because the kit is identical to what they sell here as the Baron. I compared them after reading your reply and the only difference appears to be the nib and the ink pump. They appear to be of better quality on the JNR Gent.

Thanks Again

I was umming and aahhing about going in this swap, and from the quality of the pens shown so far, I'm glad I didn't - I would have been outright embarrassed!:C

Maybe another years practice and I'll have a go next year :U

Fantastic looking pens guys. That B.E. Huon pen from Timberbits is absolutely stunning.

Cheers,
Dave

Dave, don't let the quality faze you, we all do the best we can, and we accept what our pen swap partner gives all in good will, whether it be a slimline and made by a beginner and held together by elastic bands, or whether it is made by an experienced person and a high end pen, it is the thought behind it that matters, and great friendships can be made along the way. Dave, I agree with Woodenink.

I am new to this hobby. Less than 20 pens made ... in fact, #17 is on its way to Australia now in the swap. Do I feel that my pens are the best ones made ... NO WAY! I'm still learning. However, the encouragement of these groups is part of what keeps me going to do better. So many suggestions and ideas, and so little time.

I'm sure that what I receive back will be superior to what I sent, but I also am sure that funkychicken will appreciate what he receives, and be able to provide feedback to me to help my turnings improve by the time the next exchange comes around. What I sent was the best of my abilities at this time, and a very fine pen by my standards. In any future swaps I will continue to send the best of my abilities and hopefully those abilities are improved upon year on year.

Jeff

Wow! my huge parcel arrived from Oistein in Norway today, it was just like Christmas as a little boy.

The parcel contained a gold Majestic in bog oak that is between 5000 - 6000 years old, and a huge collection of blanks that I have never seen before. this is also the first time I have held a Majestic in my hand also. A beautiful pen, thank you Oistein I am very happy on one hand but embarrassed on the other that I never sent him as many blanks. This will be corrected in the next couple of weeks and another parcel will be on its way to Norway

Also in the parcel was some Burmese teak from the bark SS Statsraad Lehmlcuhl built in germany 1812 - 1814 what a prized possession once again than you very much I will have to dig deep to equal up the swap

Wow Sam, what an exciting package, you must be over the moon. I am so glad you received something like that knowing how you appreciate old timber, history and quality work. Oistein, you couldn't have sent it to a more worthy recipient.

My little parcel from Rick has arrived.

In it was a titanium gold sedona in curly birch. What a great looking pen! - I like it! and so does the Wife. She quickly took it and put it in her handbag, so I replied with a "Happy Valentines Day!". Thanks Rick you made my day!

Also in the parcel was 3 blanks consisting of Cherry, Curly birch and a piece of crotch maple. Can't wait to turn them into pens.

Thank you so much Rick, I am very happy with my little parcel.

Glad you liked it and more important SWMBO liked it. Maybe you don't need to get flowers now. :D If I didn't mention it the curly birch blank is from the same piece of almost firewood that the pen came from so you have an idea what the finished product will look like ahead of time.

Here's the photo I took before shipping the pen.

Looks like shipping took about a week longer going your way. A successful swap, I will be in on the next one.

Thanks David.

Finally managed to get some pen turning done & my parcel to Bear31 is on its way.
Hopefully a couple of unique Aussie blanks should keep Bear amused for a short while!
Still no sign of Plomanto, so I guess he misses out :(
Will be interesting to see how long the package takes to get to Virginia.

Wow!!!! I've been in a few pen swaps before ( other sites ), but I really think the quality of all the pens so far are a lot better than I've seen before.

Perhaps it would be an idea to change the colour of the names in the list to reflect the completed swaps? Then we could encourage the slackers to get a move on:D
That's not meant to be mean or anything, but if I saw a buddy of mine hadn't sent his pen to his partner then I could remind him without embarrasment.

Without any coordinated effort, our packs arrived, on opposite sides of the globe, at the same time!!!

I have received a lovely pen made from flamed sycamore. thought I should get a really australian back drop for the photo - banksia leaves and nut (pity there isn't sound attached as there was a crow carrying on in the background and I frightened a kangaroo asleep under a tree nearby!!)

The other timbers in the pack I have heard of but have only used some London Plane (that came in a 'pen swap challenge') from the eastern states.

thanks Rod, I'll certainly enjoy turning these!

Bob, I am happy you like the package. It was my pleasure, I was getting a bit worried that it had gone astray or been held in customs. So now I can sleep a little better. By the way your pen is getting some WOW comments people love the timber. Thanks again and we will be swapping some more blanks.

Thanks for all your efforts Sam. It has been fun being involved in this exchange. I have sent my package and I am certain it should be there in Oz on Monday. I understand from my eldest that it would take four or five days to get there. GREAT !:D

Well, for better or worse, mine is in the post to Woodwrite. I should have started when Sam first announced the contest. I wish I had more time to try a few other options for something unique.

Hopefully it'll be there early next week at the latest.

Received my package from Nicholai today he said it would be here on Monday he must have some one on the inside working for him ??
The pen is a magnificent dyed and stabilized Elder Burl SIERRA micromeshed to 12000 grit then 6 coats of CA micromeshed again and then polished with Flitz Polish, also there is 2 Walnut blanks 1 xcut, 3 zebra wood and 1 acrylic inlace. My photo's dont do the pen justice.

Thanks Sam and DJ for all the hard work in putting this swap together, with all the great pens been shown I have a very large amount to learn.
