Running out of wood here!

I've been to Lasiters (spelling) and Dave's and I think that I bought everything that they had in the sort of size I want.

Where else would I go?

Thanks :)

I heat with wood so I'm always looking. Branches die and break off trees. Sometimes still green, sometimes rotten, sometimes just right.

Ask where you bought your lathe, sometimes the crates are made from exotic Asian wood. Here Japanese motorcycles arrive in nice wooden crates.

Your hair sticks are small enough to be made from pallet lumber. Here, there are pallets behind every business that sells heavy things. Last week I got a car full of dry seasoned broken white and red oak pallets with 25mm & 50mm wood.

Buy a pruning bow saw and keep it in your car to cut off likely pieces. I bring home wooden bed headboards that are oak, rock maple, and once mahogany. Broken chairs of oak and maple, occasionally teak.

Broken baseball bats.

Google: tree service Brisbane, lots of firms.

If you see a tree being cut, ask for a chunk, or two, or three.

I have made tool handles from 50 year old locust fence posts, nice figure, dulls tools quickly.

Your art is wonderful. I am servant to a 20 lb. orange tabby cat. I like your cat art.

Eliza talk to your local wood lopper or tree surgeon. They have to pay to get rid of the trees they cut down.
Here in Sydney they give it away gladly and will even ring you up to come and get it once they get to know you.

Hi Eliza,

I was moving some stuff around the shed this morning, when I come across a bundle of markers (timber pegs). I immediately though of you and you hair-sticks, as this timbers are normally hard and tough stuff and cut in a size that suits you to the ground (about 1" x 3'), you could make lots of sticks out of a bundle, huh?
Where can you find them?, well, hardware stores, westfarms, or rural supplies, places like that. They don't cost much and you will have a great variety of timbers on them, not only from the same store but by looking of the timbers species other suppliers have for sale.

PS: Tuesday 10/2/09 and no signs of your 3 kg pre-paid bag...!:?

I was on my way to doing laundry today and saw a sign "FREE STUFF" on my way back I stopped. It was a wood working shop and had been inundated with off cuts, jigs, etc.

I took my clothes home and unloaded and came back. See photos for the car full of stuff. Most of it was kindling wood, but there were off cuts of walnut, mahogany, oak, cedar, and maple, big enough to make hair sticks. Also two slabs big enough to make a couple of shallow bowls. Also a spindled chair that would make hair sticks.

The owner said that they had given away several trucks full of wood.

Wow! Lucky you! We expect to see what you make of all that! :)

Hi Elizaleahy

another place that I think is normally overlooked is a local gunsmith:doh:
When shooter replace their damaged stocks they are normally thrown out because they are unsafe to use on a gun but the timber is normally really nice like walnut etc you may need to find someone to mill it for you but I'm sure there would be someone local that would mill it for a share in the goods.

Do not be shy about asking:B
you will be surprised how much timber is thrown out:o
and it is a good selling point if you can say it is made from recycled timber:U
Good luck:2tsup:

Conwood, I mostly make small things like hair sticks (think "long pen blank") weedpots and small bowls.

I like woods that are strongly figured, like nice camphor laurel, blackheart sassy, mango - but of course, I also like huon pine! (who doesn't?)

I don't like silky oak, and I seem to be able to get heaps of it! Isn't that always the way?

What have you got, and what do you want for it? :)

where do you get timber from , " its not like it grows on trees "

if you would like some really nice burn off saved Australian timber give http://www.aussieburls.com/ a call but he's in TAZZIE and Australia Post loves him ,
to get one of his great apple crates will cost $$$$.CC's but well worth it ( sells internationally as well )

Disclaimer " I have no affiliation ,commercial or family , with Aussie burls dot com , i just purchased an apple crate off him 2 1/2 years ago and was impressed with his timber , service and communication"

someone in your area might have a bit left of an apple crate and might resell to you

raise your hand if you have purchased timber off Shane

Hi Eliza,

What sizes do you prefer. I keep lots of little pieces which I use for inlaying and plugs. I do have a fair bit of cured mango ready to mill, bohemia from street, jacaranda, desert acacia (gidea) and who knows what else.

In small bits I have tassie myrtle, apricot, cooktown ash (little bit) cedar, mahoganey, teak and probably other bits and pieces.

I can get black and brown walnut, white cedar, calyphilum, maple and other bits as they become available. I have a shipment coming down soon of white cedar, would not be a hassle to add a few bits and save on the cost of freight.

You are welcome to call me or call in and have a look and chat. I am in inner city Brisbane.

cheers
