I use marine ply for large gears and solid myrtle for pinions.
Veneered MDF works also, solid blackwood, american cherry can be used depending on size.
Have been making wooden gear clocks for about eight years.
If I knew how to add a picture I would!

Bob I have made my own plywood out of oak and glued it all up with epoxy and thus far all is well. The wheels on the last one were designed at 3/8" thickness with no cutouts and I did them with 12 X 30 degree segments again with epoxy.
