I had to make a reception desk for my new practice. I used 13ply 19mm x 1220 x 2440 sheets of birchwood plywood. The top are some old pieces of spruce from a packing crate a friend gave me. Once I cut the segments I joined them with a floating tenon of american oak 50mm x 100mm x 12.5mm and used two beech dowels for drawbore pins. You can see from the fourth photo how I managed to curve the sheets of ply. The top has a 12.5mm grove and just sits on top without any glue or screws.

The top looks great - it's incredible what you can achieve with old packing crates

Thanks folks for the kind words. That front started out as a flat sheet and I cut kerfs, leaving 3 ply untouched, every 12.5mm and wrapped the front around a subframe. The dogs are already christening it... thank god for 4 coats of varnish.

Great work.

I am interested to know how much something like that would cost if I engaged your services? It looks like a great piece of work and would look impressive in any office.

Apart from the first class return airfare from the uk not much. The kerfs were cut with a circular saw fitted with a freud saw blade which seems to cut well- and a clamp guide. All those kerfs took about 1 hour to cut. The top with a chop saw and router. Overall about 4hours between consults I think. Give it a go.
