The door hanging problem is now fixed (see "Problem Hanging Door" thread). First off I want to thank everyone for all their advice and suggestions. But I also wanted to post what the problem was for all the novice door hangers like me.
There were 2 problems.
1: I did not position 2 of the hinges exactly perpendicular to the door jam but I couldn't notice this until I decided to take the door off completely. When I did I could easily see that the hinges were not straight. So, I straightened them and most of the problem was gone but there was still some resistance which lead me to discovering the second problem.
2: The door jam on the hinge side had a slight outward bow to it near the center hinge. So I planed it down and now the door closes quite well.
It took a while but I got there in the end. So I think the lesson here is, when hanging doors, attention to detail is important.
