Hi all,

Here is a tricky one... I am presently looking at an old Dabar lathe that is a knock-off of the old Woodfasts.

It looks like quite a nice lathe barring two things:

1. The belt change seems to be a pain.

2. (MORE importantly) The tailstock quill does not have a Morse #2 taper. I am not sure what it is, but it is bigger than #2.

Thus I would want to replace the quill, has anyone ever done that before? Do you have an estimate of price?

It should not be necessary to replace the entire quill. Adapters are available, generally in single steps from larger (tailstock) to smaller (live/dead centre or Jacobs chuck), e.g. MT2 to MT1, and MT3 to MT2. US prices are about US$10, as of 2008. Google [morse taper dimensions] to identify the ones of interest, and/or contact machinery suppliers such as Carba-Tec or Jim Carroll. The usable bed length will be reduced slightly, and there may be a slight increase in offset misalignment.

Thanks Joe.

By belt change I meant speed change with belts. The belts are kind of awkwardly almost hidden away.

As for the taper adapter - hmmm - that is an interesting proposition. Of course, I don't know what the existing taper is, but I am guessing that it is a Morse 3.

If it is indeed a MT3, and if it is bigger than MT2 that is the likely candidate, then you have the option of a sleeve adapter (as Joe has said) if you already have MT2 accessories. If however you don't already own a live centre, drill chuck arbor etc in MT2, they are all available in MT3 and this would be a better option.

Sometimes these come with the lathe as well, particularly a secondhand one.

It comes with a live centre, but I have a number of centres myself - including a jacobs chuck - that are all Morse #2.

Morse Taper sizes


Different Morse tapers have easily distinguished sizes.

Measure at the big end (ie, the open hole), in inches:



#0 is 0.356

#1 is 0.475

#2 is 0.700

#3 is 0.938

#4 is 1.231,

#5 is 1.748

#6 is 2.494

#7 is 3.270
