Hope someone can help me. I am using a Tormek 1200 sharpener with the SVS185 Gouge sharpening jig but having trouble with my Bowl gouges.

Spindle gouges are sharpening up fine but as you can see by the pic that the bowl gouges are having the tips ground off. I have the jig set at J2 with a 65mm extension for a 45° bevel.

The gouges were ground to the completely wrong shape by the previous owner (these are 2nd hand) but I don't seem to be able to get them into the correct shape.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Howdy all, forget the sharpening machines! You turn using your own senses, the curves, the detail, etc. Sharpening a tool should not be left up to a clumsy machine! Give yourself some credit, what you do is freehand so why not go all the way, detail your tools as you detail your piece! Use a fine white stone until you get the profile that suits your approach!

He also posed the same question in the sharpening forum (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=90890) so there are replies there, too. :)

Here's another vid with a segment on reshaping a bowl gouge (warning: long vid!). http://www.woodworkingonline.com/2008/09/23/podcast-37-turning-tools-sharpen-your-skills-with-sharp-tools/

Basically you invert the gouge so the flute is pointing down; you grind a convex curve on what will be the top edge of the bevel. You'll be grinding away a fair amount of HSS and it'll go quicker on a normal alox wheel. Then you grind your bevel.

Added: OK, same guy as in the vid BB referred to; technique a little different but similar result.

Thanks Ern, That is a great video to watch for a beginner like me. I did not mind it being long.
