after thinking about money and stuff to do i thought bugger it and went to Carba-Tec today. i wanted to get a chuck, some finish and maybe a detail gouge ......well i got there and got a G3 Nova chuck, some shithot waxtik, the detail gouge and a pen mandrel but best of all i walked out still having enough for a bandsaw :U .....but thought it best not to get the bandsaw :(

im really happy with the chuck i got. i was thinking about the economy chuck thinking it was the smallest and lightest so it wouldn't screw my bearings in the lathe. but when i picked it up the lack of quality shows so i had a look at the Vicmarc and Nova chucks and as the Vicmarc was right over my price range i got the Nova. the only bad part of the chuck is that they DIDN'T TAKE THE DAMN BURS OFF!!!!!!!!!! if i left burs like that on any job at anywhere here in Aus i would be shot :o and the mechanism was really stiff at first but thats coming loose now....... other than that the the finish was fine (a machinist knows) not nearly as good as the Vicmarc but good enough for a high production object and it wasn't that hard to put together oh and the insert fits the spindle on my lathe so im happy :U

tried the pen mandrel in the lathe and what do you know the centers aren't as bad as i thought so i think i will be able to start turning pens at home. just one problem with the mandrel, the brass nut was locked on the mandrel and trying to undo it unscrewed the tapper!!!!! i thought to myself how can i hold this with out screwing it and then the drill press saved me making it really easy:U

got wood turning club tomorrow and this time im going with the macadamia wood so should be a good morning. happy turning :U

China "I've heard a few people say that about the later model Nova's"
to be honest i am disappointed not with the machining but that they didn't check the product before shipping as a i have worked in a few machine shops and if you don't take the burrs off after machining then the product will not be allowed through. its disappointing really for Teknatool brings down a good brand because they didn't want to put in a simple thing

Artme yeah i was at the Ipswich club today, the young bloke on the Morton (nice lathe)

Wayne Blanch thanks for the offer i think ill take you up on that at some time latter thanks

Eliza "nothing like spending money to raise the spirits! Looking forward to seeing stuff. Love looking at stuff. :)" well you wont have to wait here is what i made today......

as you can see its not the normal sort of strait grain but was branch where 3 other branches branched off (say that 3 times and then buy me a drink :U) i saw it and with a bit of encouragement i gave it a try. i used the "shithot waxtic" and i love it! far better than paraffin wax! i was just turning it to see the grain not thinking ill get something so good but it was very green and i got a few cracks re-chucking it, after a day the base has a few more cracks but owell its all practice. oh and another thing i wanted to keep some of the natural part where the bark fell off but there were some band saw cuts i wanted to get out so i wasn't left with much in the end. now when i got to the club they were having an open day (no one told me :( yeah so there were heaps of people and! when i got in the door they had not 1! but 2! VL175's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh cool can i try lol. everyone agrees they are very nice machines ill have to have a try latter (i think everyone wants to have a try lol) all in all a very good day. here is a few pic's i took of the shed

and finally here is my grinder/buff i got for $10 all in all $14 for the bearings and $13 for a can of paint, just have to get the buffing wheels and cones to finish it off and use it in the shop

last of all the detail gouge is now my best friend :U i have only had it one day but man its just such a good tool to have. well there is heaps of stuff there so hope you guys liked it all

Wow Patrick you must have had a great day. That wood has such interesting grain, all over the place. I love working with stuff like that, you never know what's inside.

What you going to make tomorrow? :)

nothing the wood wasn't talking :(( but tomorrow i thought i would try some ring holder things and i was just on your tea light thread and am inspired to give some a try. unfortunately today i realized i really should have gotten a set of pin jaws while at carba-tec and just how small most of my stock is

forgot to mention i was really excited when we first cut the macadamia and when we did you could instantly see it had mould or something in it so all the dark parts were where the mould was, also it has started to crack so hopefully it wont split and fall apart :C i really should have taken a picture of the underside of it as it clearly shows the rays of each branch and the burling (wow that is a word) between.

one last thing. i found this great site today and thought i should share its http://yoyospin.com/
Eliza there are great ideas for your hair sticks on there and food for thought for pens and yo-yo's? have a look in his tutorials and the glitter inlay ideas i know im going to try that one latter :U happy turning
