How can I get a brass sleeve going over a brass thing-that-goes-inside-a-sleeve to rotate smoothly?

Is it possable for you to describe what you are doing a little more clearly.
From what I can seem to understand you have a sleeve or (bush) you wish to put a Brass shaft or something similar into with a brass sleeve or (bush) over that.
How many of these items need to rotate.
What Diameter and Wall Thickness are these items and also the length.

Ahhh! the plot plot thickens.Do I recall you buying a new lathe?
Perhaps this question relates to turning brass in the new lathe,maybe?
.
The lathe running at the correct speed and its cutting tool set at the correct angle will leave a much better finish as opposed to the wrong RPM's and rake angle.
The turning surface speed needs to be around 80 -150 feet per minute from from memory.The tool rake I think was around 10 degrees.
If the tuning is not ok the finish could be ragged and not smooth at all, if brass upon brass.
As the rest of the blokes say, a few more specifics won't go astray.

To simplify it, if you had two brass plates and you had to make them slide against each other, how would you do it. If Echnidna is right them how about putting something between the plates?

Teflon or hdpe or a metal like steel, stainless, cast iron etc.

Can the Brass plates have oil grooves cut into them,if so a captivated oil groove will give you a thin layer of oil between the moving surfaces.

NEVER use any oil on any brass part that rubs against another brass part...
the oil will promote the growth of verdigrease.. and I would not use any grease or wax either... as if they have a high sulphur content they will do the same.
they only lubrication recomended is Graphite...
(My uncle was a Master locksmith, and lectured at many TAFES...)
