Mike’s Mystery Tool Teaser # 5

Here’s another easy one.

I found this at a market, about five years ago in North Brisbane.

It is approximately nine inches long and the body is approx two inches high, not including the top screw thingies (technical term).
Made from 14 BSW sheet steel, and then zinc colour "sprayed".
The screw thingies have small replaceable fibre plates glued to their bottom metal discs.
All screws are brass.
Larger screws are all 2BA; smaller screws are 5BA. Now there’s a hint.
The angle on the slide top “arms” is 60 degrees.
There are steel roller rods on each side; each is five sixteenths of an inch diameter.
All dimensions seem to be in increments of inches, not millimeters.
The “patent app” number stamping is 13369/52.
Name stamping is “C.HOMER” and “FRASER”.

We all know that it is a ……..
But, and here are the real questions for today.

- Who made it? Check the third photo for the maker’s stamping. Who is this manufacturer and,
- Where was it made?
- When (decade) was it made? Patented applied for in 1952?

I have never seen this unit on web sites, but as soon as I say this, probably I will see a few. And I am only a beginner.
Made by a few other manufacturers, but it in quite a different form.

It is well designed and made, and it would have lasted for many years use.
And yes, I have tried it, and it works well.

For handsaws apparently.

Made by Charles Homer Fraser of Preston Melbourne who made Mitre guide & planing attachments, paint mixers, saw, chisel & plane sharpeners - according to the HTPAA website's list of Aust toolmakers.

There's a NIB one on Ebay now - search for item 260378219147

Yes, It is a Woodworking Hand Saw Filing Guide.

Quasimodo was first with the most complete answer, and with manufacturer and country, which were the real questions, although others corrrectly said that it was for sharpening saws.
And there's even one on Ebay - astounding!

After “jointing” the saw blade, this guide is placed on top of the saw blade teeth, and after the guide height over the teeth is set with the top adjusting screws, it is screw clamped to the saw blade with the front screws.
The sliding angle guide is used to allow a saw sharpening file to file the teeth consistently and accurately.
The file angle is guided by the angled top “arms” and the rollers stop the file from filing too “deep”.

It is meant to be used with the hand saw blade clamped in a wooden faced bench vice or similar.
Some filing guides have the vice and guide built in one unit.

Thanks for looking.
