Turning magnolia is something I didn't before, so this is the first time, and as always you have to build up some experience, right. Had in paper bags three rough turnings, two of them cracked so badly, that they are only good for the fireplace, but luckely one survived.
So time to show my first magnolia turning.
It's a pretty big lidded box, DxH = 160mm x 220mm, with a meranti finial.
Carefully sanded, and finished with three layers blanc transparent lacquer.
Comments are welcome, else thanks for looking.
Cheers.

Beautiful Magnolia Box, Ad. Looks a lot like Aspen. Is it pretty soft?

Hello Al, thanks for your attention. This magnolia is not soft wood, but also not like hardwood, something inbetween. Very nice wood for my turnings, have another log in store, I really like this stuff.

That is a wonderful piece Ad!:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup: The Meranti finial sets it off nicely.

Pity the success rate was only one in three with all the cracking.

Hi Ad,
Excellent lidded box:2tsup:
I too enjoy turning Magnolia.
The form reminds me a little of Pam Reilly's work.

Hi Gil, that's right, it's a copy of a Pam box, not for 100%.. She know that I''m doing that sometimes, saw many types of lidded boxes, like boxes of Mike Stafford, he has his own typical style of making lidded boxes which I like, and there are more box turners.
But I always tell Pam that her boxes the most attractive boxes are I ever saw.
So sometimes I made a what I call a ''Pam style'' lidded box.
I'm doing this only for the big fun, not for selling. I always send my work to Pam, so also this lidded box, she saw it already.
Cheers, Ad

Eliza, biscuit barrel? could be.
This box is a gift for a lady of our club (party animal club)
She can put in this box everything she want, from candy bars till biscuits.
Or simply for the show :)
