Oh well I may as well round off the trilogy of recent toy projects.

Last year the Stinkette and I were fortunate enough to spend 6 months traveling. While we were overseas we kept a blog online to update family and friends with stories and photos. Anyway I have always had an interest in medieval times so we spent quite some time looking around castles and the like.

At one place in Scotland the Stinkette and I had the opportunity to get dressed up and prance around with armor, sword and shield. I took a few pictures of the Stinkette and posted them on the blog. As it turn out my nephew (2.5 years) was looking at the blog with his Mum and he came across the images. He was fairly impressed with Aunt Stinkette in all of the gear battling with a stranger. A few weeks later he was invited to a themed birthday party, unfortunately the theme was dress up as a fairy. Well he wasn't having any of that insisting that he should go as a knight and not a fairy.

While we were in London we managed to find him a t-shirt which had a printed suit of armor on it. On return home I made him his own sword and shield for Christmas ….. together with the shirt he really looked the part.

The designs are fairly basic. There were many similar examples in the gift shops around so I took inspiration and just made up what I thought would work when I got home. The images on the shield are cut out on the scroll saw and then glued to the ply shield. The swords are shaped from a piece of 19x42 pine with some rope.

Good news is they seemed to be popular with the kids at the market and managed to sell well. I whacked together the stand at midnight before the market.

Very nice work Stinky, i particularly like the shields.
I've been in the process of making some wooden swords for the local ti-chi group, they are in the style of a cutlass & are being made from tas oak for the main body & pommel with blackwood trim handles. I'll take some pics on tuesday when i am back at the community shed.

Have at ye, Varlet!

Nice job! I think the simplicity makes them, especially given the use they'll be getting. I also particularly like the shields.

You're just full of good ideas :)
I've seen patterns for swords on a german site before, but haven't seen anything like it ever done around here... didn't think kids are into it at all. Maybe it's just the kids who have terrific grandparents who go out of their way to make fun toys for them? :)

They really do look nice.

I'm a bit puzzled about the ti-chi swords tho? I know ti-chi is an exercise form... didn't know swords were used?
