I'm lusting after the oak logs in some. Why o why don't we have timber that will split so well in Australia?:(

We do.It's just tougher.
Why are there so many "Shingle Splitters Creeks, Gullies etc, etc " if our timbers do not cleave as well as the Northern Hemisphere species??

On the whole, they don't cleave as well because of their interlocking grain. I've looked into it a bit and the only ones I've found to cleave reasonably are stringbarks, jarrah, some sheoaks and peppermint from Tassie. Yes you can split them, but they split better tangentially rather than radially like the northern hemisphere timbers, and that's a much more stable form.

So you found the huge log he was splitting? And the radially split log also...neat photo.
