Tips for making jewellery

I'm thinking about playing with making a few bits of jewellery (from wood, of course) but have a couple of questions. If anyone can help, or point me in the right direction to read up some more, that would be great.

I'm curious about techniques for fitting loops etc for hanging a pendant or ear rings and any good Australian sources for these bits & pieces.

Also, in terms of finish, is there anything I need to be aware of when the timber is going to be in constant contact with skin>

Any pointers would be appreciated.
