Here are some: metals (http://metalsodelit.com.au/) (ring they also have copper & brass), stone here (http://www.gilmerrockshop.com/servlet/the-Crushed-Rock/searchpath/687/start/49/total/55/Categories?sfs=1a1adb42), here (http://www.arizonasilhouette.com/Crushed_Stone.htm) and here (http://www.augumspenworks.com/crushed.htm), and shell (http://www.pauacrazy.com/). There are also some cheap chinese stone sites, but I can't find them :-

Just be careful of postage charges from o/s.

You can also get stone/shells from markets and crush it yourself.

It is available in Galleries here. The pounamu carving studios on the West Coast will also have some .

I have no idea if it is available via the web . I hope not .

Good idea Bill ,
if you know someone who can mail you a small amount of chip , go for it :2tsup:

If it was available on the Web ,commercially , I fear that it would get exported in bulk to a factory somewhere , and be transformed into 'traditional Maori carvings' and then sent back here to be sold in the foreign owned New Zealand Souvenir stores .

To us , Greenstone/ Pounamu is a Tapu Tonga , a Sacred Treasure .

...yea, might even start making them here in the states. It would be novel to actually see something with a label that say's "Made In America" :o:doh:

You can get some stones and crush them yourself also. This is a quote from another forum I'm on...

"hardness shouldn't be more than 6 to enable you to sand the stone flush with the wood with 60 grit sandpaper easily enough. Turquoise is a Mohs of 5.5, malachite at 4.0, chrysocolla 2.0-4.0, azurite 3.5-4.0, lapis 5.0-6.0, obsidian 5.0-5.5. Other stones that are in this range, but are transparent so may not suite your artistic needs are calcite at 3.0 and flourite at 4.0. Stones that exceed 6.0 include agate (7.0), any quartz (rose, amethyst, etc, 7.0), jasper (6.5-7.0), chalcedony (7.0), onyx (7.0), peridot (7.0), garnet (6.5-7.5), and many others."

Hey Bowl-basher,
I know this is not local but check this one out www.gilmerrockshop.com (http://www.gilmerrockshop.com/) . Their postage from a quote I received appears reasonable.
