You might have to have one made!!

On THIS WEB PAGE (http://www.ruralheritage.com/logging_camp/peavey.htm) there are half a dozen links to suppliers in the US who still have them apparently.

Cheers,

Unless you plan to mill your own timber or split post a cant hook is rather useless. Anyway if you decide to obtain one its probably easier to have one made. If you can find some round bar or plate and have access to an oxy set , life is groovy. I recomend that you only make the hook and have a eye with a large ring in the end to allow a crow bar as leverage. When you a cutting posts in the bush its just another thing to carrry. Enjoy.

I have seen them around. Not really real ones, more like a crow bar with a hooky bit. I'm not sure if you want one which ya can't break, or one more like those on the link above.

You get them at ag field days and the like.

Thanks for the info
- Goodwoody, I am actually going to be milling so hence the question, good idea about a crowbar attachment
- outback "one you can't break" are you refering to a crowbar with a hooky bit? or is there some other gem of info you are holding onto?

Thanks,
Allan

Sigi, I have two Cant Hooks, totally invaluable. We have been able to roll and position logs that a D9 could barely move and all we had was a 50 Hp tractor. I drive the hooks in low on the log and run a chain from the lever over the top of the log. By using two hooks and a harness with varied lengths we can roll and turn the logs so the Miller can get at them.

Ask at mills or the portable milling guys normally have a couple (if they use their brains). They are normally hanging up rusting in the back of old farm sheds and most people don't know what they are. The old timers only had horses or bullocks and they worked for them.

You can purchase one from here. They don't have a web site but they do have an email address. The price in the list I have is $55.00 + $5.10 P+H. See Attachments

If you send me a PM with your e-mail address I will send you a copy of their order form with all their products on it.

Here is a picture of a Davis Starlifter that I own which is used for lifting star posts as well as lifting logs for cutting which is available from here.

Picture of http://http://ecosaw.com/SMF/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=185 the two cant hooks we make. Totally adjustable so will work on small and large logs. Biggest log i have moved with two of us one each end was a 7' diameter log weighing about 8 tons.

I got the local springworks blacksmith to make me one, $20.:2tsup: I've just got a huge shackle through the eye and use it with a crow bar.
