Circular Saw Base Plate

Has anyone ever made a new baseplate for their circular saw?

I didn't know whether to put this here of metalwork forum, but anyway... I have a 1800w GMC laser-guided 185mm circular saw (which is out of warranty), the base plate is very badly designed :rolleyes: Firstly the base plate isn't straight with the blade, the base plate edge isn't straight, the height adjustment "guide" isn't straight and I can never get it to cut at 90° even with the adjustment screw. This never bothered me until now :(

So, I'm endeavoring to make a new base plate out of aluminium. I don't need any bevel adjustment but I still want to adjust the depth of cut.

Has anyone got photos of their home-made base plates?

In my opinion your wasting your time a quality brand saw could probably be picked up on sale for 150-200 for a 7 1/4 inch variety. By the time you spend time designing a new base plate, buying materials and constructing the new base you might as well have just purchased a new saw.

Can you improve its accuracy with a few shims etc and maybe bolting a 5mm perspex plate onto the base to stop the flex?

I know it might seem like a waste of time, but I can't think of using the saw for anything else. I'm planning on using solid 6mm aluminium plate and bolting on the necessary brackets using 3mm thick angle/square extrusion.

how long has it been out of square??? if from new it might have dropped on the corner of the base plate ,put a square on the corners of the base plate if it is out try easing it back to square ,that might be all that is wrong with it .:)

....or just bolt your piece of aluminium straight on to the existing base. The little tabs and mounting brackets are probably stiff enough, it's the rest of it that is flexing. You'll lose a little depth on the cut but could be an easy fix.
