I find that you really want a variety of tips. Some solid, some wire. eg. For smoothly flowing text I find a solid tip with a small ball is far better than a wire tip, unless you're trying for a calligraphic effect.

For picture shading I'm quite content to use wire. (It's also much cheaper.) However, if you're the sort of person who wants solid "cartoon style" blocks or the "branded" look, then solid tips would be better.

FWIW, I use the Burnmaster Eagle (http://www.cws.au.com/cgi/index.cgi/shopfront/view_by_category?category_id=1107146872) unit with Razortip (http://www.cws.au.com/cgi/index.cgi/shopfront/view_product_details?category_id=1107144911&product_id=1107453926) binding post pens, so that I can swap between both wire & solid tips in the same pen.

This does put the tip of the solids a bit further away from the fingers than when using a dedicated-tip pen, so you lose a bit of fine control... but I can live with that. Well... until I can justify the cost of buying a dedicated pen, anyway. :-

I am in the process of building my own pyro tool out of an old battery charge. I picked up the idea from a design I found on the net . A guy called Priddle has done one, looks easy so I thought I would give it a go.

Hughie,

have you finished the pyro Pen yet and if so how did it go??

DIY pyro tool from a very old 12-6v battery charger.

It works very well you will need wire around 1mm thick to start with until you get used to it. Had piece of .3mm in it and it melted instantly . :o :U

I have fitted a dimmer to the infeed side of the unit. The adjustment knob is left of the gauge and selctor switch. The handle is an old screw driver handle bored out to take the wiring, plus a little milling to take the connector block.

The dimmer is available from Jaycar as you need and around 600watts capacity. In bunnies the best I could find was 450watts. This burner is based on the idea and design by Graham Priddle.

looks good , yes with out the dinner control a fine wire would be getting too much amperage:oo:, no wonder it melted:D..

What amperage is the charger putting out bu the way???

I am thinking of the ARLEC 12 volt 4amp chargers ?? do you think this would have enough output ???

Dunno Jeff its abit hard to tell with mine. I have an idea its 6amp, but its got a 15amp themal fuse, not orginal.
I reckon 4amp will work just come down on the wire size. I turn mine up about 1/3 to 1/2 its capacity. At full throttle its more like a wood vaporiser and the 1mm wire glows red continually. But I am still mucking around with it, hope to have a serious go over the week end.... maybe :U

Have a spare new unused PEM ND1 woodburning machine(just turned on to try once) still in orignal box with additional spare nibbs and a DVD on making your own nibbs .This unit is made in Victoria
If any body interested in this let me know:)

Depends on how much you want for it. If within my budget I 'm interested.

Sorry Graham, but that is well over my budget for an occasional use type of equipment.

I'll let others take advantage of your offer.

Peter.

Graham,

Have you had any bites on the Pyrograhpy set??
I am looking for the Treasurer , who is doing some at the club (CABOOLTURE WOODCRAFTERS).

Hughie,

I have built a hand piece and am acquiring some wire and then I'll take it down to the Radio Club , and we will work out what power we need to work it efficiently.

I am looking at using a computer power supply , as there are several power outlets varying from 5volts at 20amps to 12 volts at 10amps. We can then build a power regulator and rheostat control.

Jeff , With all the possible variations available on your unit its bound to work. Mine is going fine, although everything forward of the ceramic connector gets hot.

Hughie,
Here is a couple of Pic's of the home made hand piece, cable is 4mmsq that will handle 10amps at12 volts, and the connectors are solid brass , epoxied into the handle,.with a timber plug in the center, and the wires are soldered into the connectors inside.

All have been hand made , I have a small Model Makers LATHE, and can fabricate most bits I need.

I have been working on building my own control box (power ) , with another member of the RADIO Club, .

A computer power supply has multiple power outlets , from 5volts @ 18amps to 12 volts @ 10amps

Most commercial machines are using low voltage 2.2VAC @10Amps max, . This can be achieved with a computer power supply , and a small circuit board , which will drop the voltage and regulate the Amps to the hand piece.

Cost involved :
1 power supply $0- $60.00
2 hand piece $35.00
3 Circuit board & parts $25.00

Total cost should work out about $120.00, There is a unit being made by a gentleman in Brisbane for $160, however the unit I am planning will control 2 hand pieces on independent controls.

Still a good price though, mine is not so well regulated and I do get heat build up. So I have had to go to a ceramic connection block plus a few other small mods to keep the heat away from the plastic handle.

For a extra $70 you could get a good quality new unit but miss out on the "i made it myself satisfaction"

Yes I agree , but the buy it now unit will only control 1 hand piece , The unit i am building will control 2 hand pieces with their own control.

not a $70.00 saving , but a $230.00 saving , plus satisfaction of building myself.

I have just repaired a pyrography tool , for my club, the lead to the pen , had a broken wire,.

While I had It I looked at the Innards, what a shock, all the box contained were
1 transformer
2 2 terminal blocks ( connect wires )
3 a high capacity dimmer unit
5 warning light

There is not even a fuse in the circuit, yet we pay big dollars for these tools:((,
the transformer the largest part is worth all of $25.00at an electronics supplier,

I have been given several computer power supplies all which have sufficient out put to run 2 hand pieces simultaneously , the project is ongoing.
