Thanks for that Rob. I know its not up to the standard of a lot of carvers here, but I was pleased with that solution to the problem of putting such a shape on a stick without detracting from it as a walking aid. Don't know why I didn't think of shallow relief carving earlier... except that I have little experience with it. Took me out of my comfort zone for a while but it resulted in expanding my horizons with that application. I've been playing around with other stuff, like leaves and flowers. I'll post some photos when I get them done.

Thanks Whittling, I am very pleased your wife loved the eagle.
I couldn't resist....I had to go to town to see your work.
Well...I must say, the photo's just don't do them justice.....they are brilliant!
I absolutely adore Yorick...he has so much personality he made me laugh!
They are all magnificent and so unique each with their own personality. I love them all!
Fantastic art Whittling.

Thanks Featherwood.
I'm pleased you liked them. That means a good deal coming from someone of your obvious skill.

Trying to define relief carving is as slippery as a buttered watermelon.
Generally, RC seems to be carving into a surface to various depth levels,
commonly with a raised border.
Here, you have abandoned the (possible) restriction of a border and
you use nothing but curved surfaces.
Nice to meet somebody who refuses to drink downstream from the herd.

Thanks for trying RV! At least I think I have a better understanding of where the 'line' is, but as you say there seem to be a lot of interpretations as to exactly where it belongs. For myself, I don't class the lizard as RC. It has 'true to life' proportions in all 3 dimensions. It just happens to be attached to the stick by its belly, but that is what he'd look like if he were real and had crawled up there. Personally, I think he's an 'in the round' carving but because he's small, flat, and parallel to the stick on which he rests, some others seem to regard him as RC. Not that it really matters!

I do relief carvings on all 4 sides and the top.
Then I join them up. Floats my boat.

RV's Boat Rule #1
I will not ride in it unless there are 8 or more spark plugs.
RV's Boat Rule #2
I will not ride in it unless the first mate is a 38DD.
Other than that, I'll mix a pot of drinks and we shall shove off, OK?

Nice work Whittling, I really like your use of the branches for your lizard stick, works well. In regard to your Q about relief carving I teach it as either "In the round" (able to be picked up and observed from all directions) or high, medium or low relief (meaning that some part of the carved object remains attached to the background). So your Dragonflies are low relief and the Lizard is High relief. However like all things related to the Art world its open to interpetation

Thanks for that explanation Iggy. I'm a bit of a novice in a lot of areas as I'm mostly self-taught and so have 'holes' in my knowledge base. The low - high relief makes sense in helping describe/categorise carving work.
As for the lizard... there were originally 3 branches but I only managed to use two of them. I needed more imagination to utilise them all, which I found a bit disappointing. Maybe next time.
