    Default Abalone shell found.

Hand holding Abalone shell, the hand is Western red cedar finished in Danish oil and wax.
    Comments and advice welcome.

Pretty nice. Pretty nice. WRC and abalone shell = two of my favorite flavors.

To me the hand changes from palm to back. Palm-view seems the chubby hand of a small child. The back appears to be an adult hand, perhaps a bit thick. Do I see a touch of arthritis in those knuckles (says he, looking at his own hands!)
The abalone shell in the palm is neat and tidy. BC abalone shells have random, messy interiors. That one looks patterned.
Somebody posted a hand carving a while back, as a cellphone holder. This has more appeal to me.

    Hi Rob,

Good on you for having a go at this. Hands are not easy, especially when they are open like this. I particularly admire the way you have included the little creases and lines in the palm.

For next time... I think you need to have a closer look at the thumb. I think this one is too long, especially between the two knuckle joints. Also the meaty part of the palm at the base of the thumb is a bit small. I think changes to these two areas will give you better proportion over all.

Don't get me wrong.. I think its a pretty good effort. Just some thoughts....

Whittling, I'll give the boy 9/10, He got a lot of the crease details spot on. Possibly not planned but to me, I like the age change from front to back as I mentioned before.
I would not dream of trying to carve a hand. No where near the needed talent.

RV and Whittling, Thanks for the positive comments, naturally I used my own hand as a model and RV you almost got it spot on, I do have small chubby hands and arthritis,I'm not a big bloke. I did take a lot of measurements. Whittling I agree with the thumb, I took too much off and couldn't compensate, the creases are definitely deliberate. It was a hard carve and it will be a long time before I attempt another but I enjoyed the challenge.
    Rob.
