    Default Advice needed

I am wanting to do a bit of carving / sculpture and need some advice re tools etc.

I did my c&j apprentice ship in a joinery, and worked as a builder so I have some understanding of tools and timber.

I want to do work for things like box tops and sculpture to maybe 450 mm high, not fine detail like every hair on a head more in art nouveau style of soft curves.

I am after what carving tools I should start with, I am not keen on chisel sets I would rather buy single items and build up as required and what timber would be good to start with as I gain experience.

Thanks for any help and advice you can give me.

    Cheers Rick

    Welcome, Rick.

As you know, the tools vary with the job.
Each style of wood carving has a fairly well defined set of starting tools.

Probably best to pick one (relief carving?), buy some tools and begin.
I can give you a list that I started with. Hindsight will tell you what to do next.
"Carving-sharp" is a tool concept that is as much a learned skill as anything.

I decided that I really didn't like relief carving (the course was a birthday gift.)
Then I realized that if I did relief carving on all 4 sides and the top, I might be satisfied. = correct.

Thanks for the info, I am still getting stuff together before I start working on the projects.

I thought I would get some response from Aussie carvers, maybe I should change my details, I just noticed my location is spelt wrong,I am on the south coast NSW.

    Thanks again. Rick
