Thread: The Arbortech TURBOPlane™

Jim - the only thing I want one of these for is shaping chair/stool seats, i.e. not a great deal of material to remove, but a good surface finish would mean less sanding afterwards. The self-limiting cutting depth would also save gouging out great chunks by mistake !
After watching the video it looks like this beastie will do the job, but is it the best for the task? I was just about set on getting the Holy Galahad sander disk thingy, but will now hold off until I see some feedback on the new TurboPlane...
Do you expect to have them available for sale at the Sydney WWW show in July?
Cheers

They will be really good for that job, it is like all tools you would need a bit of practice but certainly doable.
You would be able to shape with this really easy and only need a light sand afterwards.
You will not have to worry about dig ins like other tools do.
See you in Sydney.Jim Carroll

They're running a Father's Day competition at the moment on their blog and the main prize is the turboplane, so maybe it would be worthwhile to enter it just in case it's your lucky day and you win?
No loss there as you said you don't need it but wouldn't mind one so give it a shot, just need to tell them why you should win.

OK, so it is now 2 years later & I actually took it out of the packet today & I love it.
Basically, I need to make a large wooden backing 'slab' to hold a brass plaque & some pottery artwork.
I dug through my hoard & found a suitable slab & took to it with the turboplane to knock it into shape.
Looks like a slab of mango, even has some copper wire embedded in it.
Very much like using the industrial carver on its side but much easier to get a nice smooth flowing surface.
I'll get some photos of what I'm working on tomorrow.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

One little question, how did you manage to open a thread that's been inactive for more than a year?

It would be perfect if the Turbo plane comes with its own dust extraction kit. much like that of the Irwin Mortar Rake. The guy was making a bit of wood chips everywhere.

I got one back in April to do the top on a stool I made for the woodwork unit of my D&T teacher switch program. Fun to use and a reasonable price but not sure I would want to use it daily or for any extended period. Finish was good and easily further finished using the little arbortec sanding disks.

Steve, if venture up the coast abit, you can give one a try. I have one and use it to take off spigots of bowls/platters too big for my Longsworth chuck.
I agree with Burnsey, it's the type of machine to be switched on with and have the workpiece secured . . . DAMHIKPat
