From benchseat to boner.
I had a call from one of my galleries last year saying that they had a client who wanted a particular bench seat. The particular bench seat however turned out to have been designed by a very famous U.S designer, who could have sued ruthlessly.
I told the gallery that I could not make it for copyright reasons, however I'd be happy to make the client one to another design.
Everything went quiet for months and I thought I'd lost the job until my trusting gallery put me back in contact with the client who still wanted a bench seat.
Keen to know something of the client so that I could design him a piece to suit him, I tried to quiz him about interests, passions, etc.
He gave nothing away,no hint of the above. So I suggested he visited my website to see if any of the designs appealed to him.
As soon as he went to the website he said "I'd like one of those bones".
Funny how things turn out sometimes. I still had the bone on the website but for various reasons its not for sale.
Went over to the west coast of Tassie and bought a log(huon pine)that I reckoned I could get a few sculptures out of. Plus another one for some turnings.
Anyway the first picture is of the practice one I made as I hadn't done a carving for some time. ''Femurs" or leg bones are a strange looking thing, from some angles they almost look like a reclining figure, from other angles they look a bit phallic!.So this one I tried to emphasise the reclining figure side of things by giving it a full/pregnant belly with belly button.
The client didn't want a pregnant one but he did want a belly button.(second pic)
The bones have been bleached with sodium hyperchlorite to give them that white driftwood sort of appearance.
Have got shots showing the various steps of making as well..... if anyone is interested.

Hey - nice boner!
Really nice shaping and and original concept. Are these to sat upon as well or just kinda 'dug'. Size?
Now show us yer WIP's.
Im also interested in the bleaching. Haven't done any and it could be useful down the track.

W.I.P's
From log to finish.
Chainsaw to start with, then arbortech, chisels and then the dreaded sandpaper.
Finish by the way was simply brushing on liberal amounts of sodium hyperchlorite, letting it soak for a while then hosing off.Its basically just bleaching the timber. You could use normal household bleach but it takes several soakings.

I'm struggling with the concept of that much huon pine in one place. I'd be happy with the off cuts of a job like this.
