Birds Lovespoon Finished
I have just finished this Welsh lovespoon project that had been set aside for a while due to other projects that had priority. It is carved from NSW Rosewood and finished with 'Shellawax' and then 'EEE' polish. The Shellawax was not a wise choice as I couldn't supply the friction needed to get an optimum finish by hand rubbing, without endangering the piece.
My reason for using the Shellawax was to seal the timber and better facilitate a glaze of artists oil and turps to accentuate the modelling with a glaze that could easily be modified in its effect. However the colour and shadow contrast didn't seem to need this when the rose wood was polished. So I left it as its natural colour.

Beautiful work. I love it.
How the hell did you sand it up to such a nice finish?... Steve

Thank you for the encouraging comments everyone.
Steve; the sanding is just a matter of time spent with little pieces of rolled wet and dry, sometimes held in a split bamboo skewer. 'Everyone has a price' when it comes to how much time you will spend on sanding.

Yep.
I glue paper to short lengths of balsa, or roll it with a thin strip of tape round the middle, Dremel drum sanders, amongst other things.
I like the idea of split bamboo. Can sort of picture it.
Just thought you might have some other secret I didn't know about to speed the process.
Your work looks great.
I'm working in NG Rosewood at the moment, (a box not a carving), but was gonna carve a border around the top and bottom originally.
Is NSW Rosewood similar to NG Rosewood to work?
Edit: Just checked out your blog.I didn't appreciate the scale earlier and thought it was much larger. Even more kudos. Wonderful work.... Steve

Gorgeous David.
